Starting (back) from zero

You’ve been looking for a job for a long time since your last experience. You’re starting a career and didn’t find the place you were dreaming about and start to wonder why you’ve been studying an industry when you see yourself working on a survival job and still searching for the company that will give you the chance to really start the career you’ve been waiting for. You’re over 50′ and you’re unemployed for the first time since many years, loosing your job for economical reasons, relocation or God knows what reasons…

Meeting obstacles

You’re tired to register for hours in all job sites filling all your informations - receiving acknowledges of your job applications thanking you for your application and telling you that because of an important numbers of applications, the company may not answer to all candidates so if you don’t have any news from them within 2, 3 weeks and sometimes 2 months; just consider your application have been unsuccessful. Mentioning that they will keep your details and resume to contact you back in case an opportunity would arise that would match your skills. So many “ifs”, so annoying. Sometimes, as you’re applying everyday, as searching for an opportunity is a job by itself, you receive a negative answer for an application 2 months after having applied and you don’t even remember them. Worst, what about all those jobs you’ve been applying for which you never had any answer. A negative answer is always considered as a courtesy answer but ignorance hurts and leave a very negative effect.

Getting tired

You’re tired of those tips and advices for job interviews or how to write a resume posted by people who doesn’t know what been unemployed for a long time is. All those articles posted by companies whom pride themselves to have the best practices and best conducts, giving you advices on how to… But what about them? What about those recruiters ignoring your applications when your skills fit almost perfectly the job description but doesn’t have any answer? Why?

In my life career; I have resign several times without having a signed job, I have been fired, I have been joggling with freelance assignments, small & short jobs and job search, trying to build start up companies, some worked out, some don’t until I embrace completely the freelance status for 5 years after gaining 15 years of experience in Business development and the Recruitment industry. I know what unemployment is. I know the challenge and the courage needed in the daily job hunt the of any job seeker. And now, all the companies that have ignore once my resume have been all at least once my clients.

“The [long-term unemployed] just need employers to realize that it does not reflect at all on their abilities or their value. It just means they have been dealing with the aftermath of this really tough job market, and all they need is a fair shot. In addition, with that shot, an out-of-work young person can get the critical experience he needs to improve his employment prospects for the rest of his life. With that shot, someone with decades of experience could get back in the game and show a younger worker the ropes. We can give them that shot.” President Barack Obama.

You want to get back on track

  1. Check you mood. Check your mental attitude. Be positive. Be enthusiastic. Be a Talent, a person of value and not a desperate job seeker.
  2. Check your first name and last name on Google. Check the results. Check your Facebook page and avoid embarrassing pictures. Check your personal branding.
  3. Rewrite your CV. But don’t rewrite it just to change the forms and presentation but rewrite the result of an interview you have to have with a recruiter or an HR or an expert. Rewrite it litterally. Prepare several CV: one with all your experiences, one with highlighted experiences avoiding small or non-related jobs.
  4. Fill in the Resume Gap. A resume should be a history of things you’ve accomplished, not only things you’ve been paid for. It can be “job search + a small survival job + trainings or a side activity.
  5. Be open to contract jobs and volunteering jobs. Consider online jobs and stepping outside your career path. It will always have a positive impact on your profile and will show that you’re taking the time to choose carefully your next opportunity and not a desperate job seeker.
  6. Consider temporary work and unglamourous sectors. This is often a very good way of getting a foot in the door and securing a permanent post later on. Anyone choosing this route in the interests of gaining work experience will impress a future employer at a future date, and be sure to flag up any financial sacrifice you have made.
  7. Consider being a Freelance. If you’ve been unemployed for a while, maybe it’s time to consider presenting your skills not as a traditional resume but as a service. Applying to contract missions. Offering your services, training, consulting… Permanent opportunities can arise from that point.
  8. Act as a Business developer. Target 100 companies and find the Recruiter email, one by one. Do the same for specialized recruitment firms. Send your resume to everyone of them. Target and customize your resume for each different company and each different job. A bit long but you’ll see the results.
  9. Get ready for job interviews; train yourself with a friend or a mentor. Find a coach or a help from a recruiter. Think about the Video resume. A video resume can be a simple presentation but it’s more effective if you make a video with someone asking you all the questions you’ve been asked in a job interview. Hitting 2 birds with one stone, you’ll have a video resume introducing a job interview of yourself and it will make you prepared for a real one.
  10. Publish your resume and all professional informations in the job work wish advert offered for free in Highventures.(Register as a recruiter). Publish several ones in several locations. Share it on Linkedin, Twitter, Google+, Linkedin and all specialized blogs, groups and Forums.
